ABI's main thrust is our Haitian Adult Literacy Program, which we founded in following a visit to a rural mountain area near Kenscoff and seeing such great need. Although the literacy rate among youth under age 24 in Haiti has risen dramatically in recent years, the literacy . Our adult literacy program helps women and men of Bon-Repos, Haiti with fundamental reading and writing skills in Haitian Creole. Our trained instructors provide two-hour long evening classes three days a week in a small intimate setting. This program also encourages participants to explore vocational skills.
AKV offers literacy classes for rural farmers and their families with a focus on environmental sustainability through better farming techniques and fundamental reading, writing, and arithmetic skills. The project has also recently initiated a micro- credit activity so that farmers can start businesses and earn a reliable and sustainable income. Working in partnership with the Haitian people, FLM Haiti provides health care, education, trade skills, and employment to improve the quality of life in the communities we serve. 70+ adult literacy centers in 11+ communities provide reading, writing, and basic math skills to some 2,+ individuals each year. More than 20,+ adults have been served.
